It is funny how we know the history and culture of a land we do not live in yet know so little about where we live. Thus, began our mission to explore Manila, one city at a time.
DESTINATION: Marikina
Starting Time: 11am
End Time: 5pm
How to get to J.P. Rizal in Marikina - Waze (app) and Google Maps
Marikeno (native people in Marikina) are said to be the most disciplined people in the Philippines. If the cleanliness around Marikina were a testament to that, Marikenos would pass with flying colors. The streets I could say were similar to those in Singapore - free from litter and we saw people from households cleaning their own front area even if it were facing a street.
SHOE CAPITAL of the Philippines
Marikina produces 70% of the shoes in the country. and holds the World's Largest Pair of Shoes, recognized by the Guinness World Records. In Marikina, you can find the Shoe Museum which houses 800 out of the 3000 shoes that were part of the famous shoe collection of the Former First Lady Imelda Marcos. Entrance fee is Php 50
FOODIE DESTINATION
Aside from durable shoes, Marikina is also famous for its brown puto (topped with a slice of cheese) and Everlasting.
Mama Chit's Burgers - The burger was juicy and smells wonderful but the patty could've been more flat/evenly distributed - it takes a few bites of bread before you reach the patty.
Macky's Palabok (Php 25), Goto (Php 25) and Tokwa't Baboy (Php 50). Really loved the Goto with real meat and really tasty. The Tokwa't baboy had a sweet vinegar taste - really good.
MOST NOTABLE CHURCH
The Parish of Our lady of the Abandoned otherwise known as the Marikina Catholic Church (J.P. Rizal Street) is a Spanish-ear Church started by the Augustinians in 1687 and finished by 1690.
On our day of visit, we were quite lucky we saw the Mama Mary Fluvial Parade even before they departed
OTHERS
Riverbanks Center - home of the world's largest pair of shoes
TIP: Shoe manufacturers go here on Sunday's to sell their durable shoes.

Pink Chiffon's - blah food - outskirts of J.P. Rizal - don't go here.
Overcooked beef teriyaki (Php 145) and overpriced lasagna (really small serving Php 145)
